Successor to the Valdivia culture, the Machalilla people of coastal Ecuador occupied southern Manabí and the Santa Elena Peninsula between roughly 1800 and 1100 BCE, bridging the early and late Formative ceramic traditions.
The Machalilla culture of coastal Ecuador was transformed into the Chorrera culture around 1100 BCE through Mesoamerican cultural contact that added new ceramic and cultural traits to the Machalilla complex.
