Kingdom of the Lozi (Luyi/Luyana) people on the Bulozi floodplain of the upper Zambezi (modern western Zambia), founded per tradition by the Litunga Mboo Mwanasilundu Muyunda after a migration from the Lunda Empire; ruled through the 18th century by successive Litungas, reaching serious internal instability by the reign of the 10th Litunga, Mulambwa (turn of the 19th century).
Weakened by succession war between Mulambwa's sons, the kingdom was conquered c. 1840 by the Makololo (Sotho refugees from the Mfecane); a Lozi rebellion restored the kingship in 1864. Lewanika (r. 1878-84, 1885-1916) sought British protection via a series of concessions (1889-99); the kingdom was incorporated into Northern Rhodesia in 1911, ending full sovereignty, though the Litunga institution survives to the present as a recognized traditional authority within Zambia.
