First and longest-lived of China's Southern Dynasties, founded when general Liu Yu deposed the Eastern Jin; ruled the south from Jiankang while the north fragmented under Northern Wei and its rivals.
Overthrown in 479 by general Xiao Daocheng, who founded the Southern Qi.
