Seafaring Illyrian-adjacent tribe of the northeastern Adriatic coast, inhabiting Liburnia between the Arsia (Raša) and Titius (Krka) rivers (modern Croatia); noted for maritime skill, piracy, and the light, fast liburna galley later adopted into the Roman navy. Attested by Greek sources holding Kerkyra (Corfu) until the Corinthians settled it c. 733 BC.
Brought under Roman control in Octavian's Illyrian/Liburnian campaigns of 35-33 BC; the region was later organized as the Roman conventus of Liburnia.
