The 'Kingdom of a Million Elephants,' the dominant Lao Buddhist kingdom whose fragmentation into three rival principalities opened the way for Siamese and Vietnamese domination.

Dissolved in 1707 when a succession dispute split the unified kingdom into three rival successor states: the Kingdom of Luang Phrabang, the Kingdom of Vientiane, and the Kingdom of Champasak.
