Swahili coast trading town and cultural center of the Lamu archipelago.

Lost its independence in 1890 when the Heligoland–Zanzibar Treaty transferred the Swahili coast from Zanzibar to British colonial rule; Lamu became part of the East Africa Protectorate and later Kenya Colony, though it retained local cultural autonomy.
