A Berber clan/confederation that emerged in Cyrenaica (eastern Libya) in the late 3rd century AD and raided Roman Cyrenaica and Tripolitania through the 4th century -- during this early phase Roman sources knew them under the name Austuriani.
Continued as a regional power into the Vandal and Byzantine periods: defeated the Vandals in the Tripolitania expedition of the 520s under their leader Cabaon, then played a major role in the Berber-Byzantine tribal wars of the 540s before being decisively defeated by the Byzantine general John Troglita.
