A major Sumerian city-state whose long rivalry with Umma produced some of the oldest known border conflicts in recorded history, and whose records (including the reforms of Urukagina) illuminate early Mesopotamian governance.
Conquered by Sargon of Akkad c. 2334 BCE, ending Lagash's independence; the city continued under Akkadian and then Ur III rule, with its last period of prominence under governor Gudea (c. 2144–2124 BCE), and thereafter faded from significance.
