Qataghan (Kataghan) Uzbek khanate of the plains south of the Oxus, at its height under Mir Muhammad Murad Beg, who overran Badakhshan in 1829 and made himself the dominant power between the Hindu Kush and the river; visited and described by Lieutenant John Wood in 1837-38.
Broken by Dost Mohammad Khan's Afghan Turkestan campaign of 1838-39 and by Murad Beg's death; the Afghans took Balkh in 1850 and conquered Kunduz from the Qataghans in 1859, with the khanate formally abolished by Abdur Rahman Khan in 1888.
