A Buddhist oasis kingdom on the northern Tarim Basin silk road, attested continuously in Chinese annals from the Han to the Song dynasty, a major center of Buddhist translation (birthplace of Kumārajīva) before absorption into the Kara-Khanid/Uyghur sphere.

Absorbed into the Tang protectorate and later the Uyghur and Kara-Khanid spheres, fading as an independent oasis kingdom.
