Temne kingdom of the Sierra Leone hinterland, founded c. 1505 by migrants seeking trade with coastal Portuguese; by the mid-17th century its Bai (kings) levied customs on European ships watering along the Rokel River and Port Loko Creek, and the English trader Thomas Corker's 1684 arrival began the influential Caulker trading family among the Temne.
The Kingdom of Koya remained the dominant Temne polity of northern Sierra Leone through the 18th and 19th centuries; it was absorbed into the British Sierra Leone Protectorate declared over the hinterland in 1896.
