Kingdom of Whydah (Hueda)

1580 – 1727
KingdomAfrica

Small but commercially powerful Gbe kingdom on the Slave Coast, headquartered at Savi near the port of Glehue (Ouidah), whose rulers monopolized Atlantic trade through the port before Dahomey's conquest.

Conquered by King Agaja of Dahomey in 1727, ending Whydah's independent existence; its former territory and slave-trading port at Ouidah were absorbed into the Kingdom of Dahomey, though the exiled Hueda royal line and refugee communities staged periodic resistance (including a major 1728 counter-attack) that was ultimately suppressed.
