The dominant Greek city-state of Sicily, alternating between democracy and tyranny, and the largest and wealthiest Greek polis outside the Aegean at its height.

Conquered by the Roman Republic in 212 BCE after a two-year siege (214–212 BCE) during the Second Punic War, and incorporated into the Roman province of Sicily.
