Centralized Great Lakes kingdom under the Nyiginya dynasty, ruled through German and Belgian overlords until the 1961 revolution.
Abolished on 28 January 1961 when the coup of Gitarama — carried out with tacit Belgian approval and led by the PARMEHUTU party — deposed the Tutsi mwami Kigeli V Ndahindurwa (who was abroad and barred from returning) and declared a republic; Rwanda became fully independent as a republic under Grégoire Kayibanda on 1 July 1962.
