Kingdom of Romania

1881 – 1947
KingdomEurope

Fully sovereign Romanian kingdom under the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty beginning with Carol I's coronation in 1881; capital briefly moved to Iași during German occupation of Bucharest (1916-1918); gained substantial territory (Transylvania, Bessarabia, Bukovina) after WWI (Greater Romania), then lost much of it in 1940, before the monarchy was abolished at the end of WWII.

King Michael I abdicated under communist pressure on 30 December 1947; Parliament proclaimed the Romanian People's Republic the same day.
