A Hellenistic kingdom on the Black Sea coast of northern Anatolia, which under Mithridates VI Eupator became Rome's most formidable eastern adversary, temporarily seizing much of Asia Minor and Greece.

Defeated by Pompey in the Third Mithridatic War (63 BCE); Mithridates VI fled to the Crimea and died there. Pontus was absorbed into the Roman province of Bithynia et Pontus.
