Kingdom of Odoacer

476 – 493
KingdomEurope

The barbarian kingdom Odoacer founded in Italy after deposing the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, at the Battle of Ravenna in 476 AD -- the event traditionally marking the end of the Western Roman Empire. Odoacer ruled nominally as a client of the Eastern Roman emperor while functioning as an independent king in Italy.

Ended when Theodoric the Great, sent by the Eastern Emperor Zeno to unseat Odoacer, invaded Italy from 489, besieged him in Ravenna, and assassinated him in 493 after a negotiated surrender, founding the Ostrogothic Kingdom in its place.
