Kingdom of Nepal

1768 – 2007
KingdomAsia

Formed when Gorkha king Prithvi Narayan Shah unified the Himalayan hill states, the Hindu Kingdom of Nepal was ruled in turn by the Shah dynasty and, from 1843, by hereditary Rana prime ministers who reduced the monarch to a figurehead until the Rana regime's fall in 1951.

Democratic reforms and constitutional monarchy followed the 1990 people's movement; the Nepalese Civil War (1996-2006) and the 2001 royal massacre further destabilized the crown, and after King Gyanendra's imposition of direct rule provoked mass protest, the Constituent Assembly abolished the monarchy and declared a republic on 28 May 2008.
