Kingdom of Nangchen

1300 – 1955
Sovereign stateAsia

One of the five great kingdoms of Kham, ruled by the Dru ('bru) clan over the twenty-five tribes of Yushu; a pastoral kingdom whose trading capital Jyekundo was a caravan hub, keeping its autonomy from both Lhasa and Beijing until the tusi system was abolished in 1955.

Its last king Tashi Tsewang Dorje ordered submission to the advancing Chinese Communists in 1949 after the PLA took Xining; the kingdom was formally abolished as Nangqên County in 1955.
