Kingdom of Mysore

South Indian kingdom founded c.1399 as a Vijayanagara vassal under the Wodeyar dynasty; expanded into a major Deccan power in the 17th century, was seized by the military commander Haidar Ali in 1761 and ruled as a de facto sultanate by Haidar and his son Tipu Sultan until Tipu's death at the 1799 Siege of Seringapatam, after which the British restored the Wodeyars as a princely state.

Direct British control 1831-1881 after alleged Wodeyar misrule; Wodeyar rule restored 1881; the princely state acceded to independent India in 1947 and was fully absorbed into Mysore State in 1950.
