Kingdom of Mercia

527 – 918
KingdomEurope

The dominant Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the English Midlands during the 7th and 8th centuries, reaching its height under Offa who built the famous dyke marking the Welsh border.

Lost its remaining independence in 918 when Edward the Elder removed the 'Lady of the Mercians' Ælfwynn from power in December 918 and took direct control of Mercia, absorbing it into the expanding English kingdom.
