Matamba became a nominal Portuguese vassal in 1744 when Queen Ana II signed a treaty following a Portuguese invasion — though real sovereignty was largely retained — and was finally incorporated into Portuguese Angola in 1909 after a Portuguese military expedition subjugated the kingdom.
