Great Lakes kingdom west of Lake Victoria, prominent in 19th-century caravan trade.

Abolished between 1962 and 1963 when Tanzania's President Julius Nyerere dissolved all traditional kingdoms in favour of African socialism following independence; the Karagwe kingdom had survived through German and British colonial rule (as Karagwe District) before formal abolition.
