Kingdom of Kandy

1469 – 1815
KingdomAsia

The Kingdom of Kandy was the last independent monarchy of Sri Lanka, whose mountain fastness allowed it to resist European colonial powers for nearly 350 years; its Temple of the Tooth remains the most sacred site in Theravada Buddhism.

The Kingdom of Kandy ended on 2 March 1815 CE when the last Kandyan king Sri Vikrama Rajasinha surrendered to British forces under Governor Robert Brownrigg; the Kandyan Convention was signed, ceding the kingdom to the British Crown and ending Sinhalese sovereignty.
