1861 – 1946
KingdomEurope

Unitary kingdom proclaimed in 1861 under Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, completing the Risorgimento unification of the Italian peninsula and later pursuing colonial expansion and, under Mussolini, Fascist dictatorship.

Abolished on 18 June 1946 after a June 2 institutional referendum rejected the monarchy in the wake of Fascist defeat in World War II, giving way to the Italian Republic.
