The most powerful of the medieval Welsh kingdoms, based in northwest Wales (Anglesey and Snowdonia) from c. 500, reaching peaks of Welsh political dominance under Rhodri the Great and Llywelyn the Great before its conquest by Edward I of England following the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282.

Conquered by Edward I of England; Welsh independence ended with the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282 and the Statute of Rhuddlan (1284), which annexed Gwynedd into the Principality of Wales under the English crown.
