Kingdom of the East Saxons, covering Essex, Middlesex, much of Hertfordshire and (briefly) west Kent, with London for a time within its orbit. One of the seven traditional Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, founded in the 6th century.
Survived as a minor kingdom under growing Mercian and West Saxon overlordship; its last king, Sigered, ceded Essex to Ecgberht of Wessex in 825.
