The Kingdom of Dahomey was conquered by French forces in the Second Franco-Dahomean War (1892–1894); King Béhanzin surrendered on 15 January 1894 and was deported to Martinique, after which Dahomey was proclaimed a French protectorate (29 January 1895) and later French Dahomey colony, becoming independent as the Republic of Benin in 1960.
