Kingdom of Castile

1065 – 1515
KingdomEurope

The dominant Christian kingdom of central and southern Iberia, engine of the Reconquista, which united with Aragon under the Catholic Monarchs to form the foundations of modern Spain.

Merged with the Crown of Aragon through the dynastic union of their heirs; the composite monarchy became the Spanish Monarchy under Charles I (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) in 1516, though Castile and Aragon remained legally distinct kingdoms until the Nueva Planta decrees of 1707–1716.
