The Kingdom of Bonny signed a protectorate treaty with Britain in 1886 ceding authority over foreign relations; it was incorporated into the Oil Rivers Protectorate (declared 1885, confirmed 1884–1885) and then the Niger Coast Protectorate (renamed 1893), and its territory was merged into the Colony of Southern Nigeria in 1906.
