A major Middle Mississippian mound center on the Ohio River at the southern tip of Illinois, with at least 11 platform mounds and a surrounding palisade — the region's second-largest Mississippian complex after Cahokia and the type site for the Kincaid/Angel-sphere pottery sequence in the lower Ohio valley.
Abandoned by roughly 1400, part of the broader 14th-15th-century contraction of Mississippian mound centers across the Midsouth (the 'Vacant Quarter').
The classic University of Chicago excavation monograph and still the foundational site report on Kincaid Mounds.
