The Khedivate of Egypt was abolished on 5 November 1914, when Britain declared a formal protectorate over Egypt upon the Ottoman Empire joining the Central Powers in World War I; Khedive Abbas II was deposed in absentia and the khedival title replaced by the Sultanate of Egypt under Hussein Kamel.
