Turkic-Tatar successor khanate to the Golden Horde on the middle Volga, established when Ulugh Muhammad seized the throne of Kazan in 1438; a major regional power contesting Muscovy for over a century.

Conquered by Ivan the Terrible's forces after the Siege of Kazan in October 1552; the last khan, Yadegar Moxammat, was captured and the territory absorbed into the Tsardom of Russia, followed by forced Russification and Christianization.
