Hunters and fishers of the middle Yenisei and the last surviving people of the Yeniseian language family — a linguistic isolate whose relatives (Kott, Arin, Assan) were absorbed, and whose ancestors' tradition remembers being driven north out of the Sayan mountains.
Not an ending: Cossacks from Mangazeya set up a tribute post at Imbat in 1607 and Ket bows could not answer firearms; deportations in the 18th century broke the clan structure and part of the Ket were moved into Selkup country. About 1,088 people identified as Ket in the 2021 Russian census, the language now critically endangered.
