Birnin Kebbi, the capital of the Kingdom of Kebbi, was captured by Abdullahi dan Fodio's jihadist forces in 1805 and incorporated into the Gwandu Emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate, though Kebbawa resistance continued; the remnant Kebbi polity and the Gwandu Emirate were incorporated into British Nigeria's Northern Nigeria Protectorate in 1903, with the Kebbi Emirate continuing as a traditional institution in Kebbi State, Nigeria.
