Kathiri-dynasty sultanate of the interior Hadhramaut valley in southeastern Yemen, founded in the late 14th century and at its height ruling much of Hadhramaut; from the 19th century it was truncated by its Qu'aiti rival and confined to an inland enclave around its capital Seiyun.
Remained under British protection (Aden Protectorate, then Protectorate of South Arabia) after 1888; the last sultan al-Husayn ibn Ali was overthrown in October 1967 and the sultanate was absorbed into newly independent South Yemen in November 1967.
