State of Katanga

A mineral-rich breakaway state proclaimed by Moïse Tshombe and the CONAKAT party on 11 July 1960, days after Congolese independence, with backing from the Union Minière du Haut-Katanga mining company and Belgian military advisers; central to the Congo Crisis.

Dissolved in January 1963 after a United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC) military campaign; reintegrated into the Republic of the Congo (later Zaire/DRC) as Katanga Province.
