Imbangala warrior state on the upper Kwango that dominated the Central African slave trade as a Portuguese commercial intermediary.
Conquered and incorporated into Portuguese Angola in 1910–1911 following Portuguese military campaigns; the kingdom had resisted Portuguese incursions through the 1890s but was finally subdued and its territory integrated into colonial Angola circa 1911.
