Tell-based Neolithic-to-Chalcolithic culture sequence of the East Balkans, whose seven-phase stratigraphy at the type site underpins Balkan prehistoric chronology.
Its Chalcolithic phase (Karanovo VI, linked to the Gumelnița culture) collapsed by c. 4000 BC with no sign of conquest; the site was reoccupied only later, in the Early Bronze Age (Karanovo VII).
