The independent Kingdom of Kano was conquered during the Fulani jihad of Usman dan Fodio: the last Hausa sultan Muhammadu Alwali was deposed in 1805 and killed in 1807 when Kano city fell; the Emirate of Kano was established c. 1807 as a vassal of the Sokoto Caliphate, survived British conquest in 1903, and continues today as a traditional institution within Kano State, Nigeria.
