The Kingdom of Kaarta was conquered by El Hadj Umar Tall's Toucouleur forces in 1854 when its capital Nioro du Sahel fell and the Faama Mamady Kandian was killed; the territory was incorporated into the Toucouleur Empire and later into French Sudan (present-day Mali) after France conquered the Toucouleur state in 1890–1893.
