Janjira State

The Siddi (Habshi) sea-state of the Konkan, ruled from an island fortress by admirals of Abyssinian descent who served Ahmadnagar, Bijapur and then the Mughals; alone among the states of western India it never fell to the Marathas, defeating Shivaji, Sambhaji and the Peshwa in turn.

Acceded to India in 1947 and merged into Bombay State on 8 March 1948; its Kathiawar dependency Jafarabad went to Saurashtra.
