Large Late Formative center on the Pacific piedmont of Chiapas whose distinctive narrative relief-carving style ("Izapan style") is considered a key transitional link between Olmec and Maya art and iconography.
Passed its architectural apogee by c. 100 BCE but remained occupied at reduced scale through the Classic and into the Early Postclassic, finally abandoned by roughly 1200 CE.
