Africa Orientale Italiana (A.O.I.): a unified Fascist Italian colonial administration proclaimed by Mussolini on 1 June 1936 after the conquest of Ethiopia, merging Italian Somaliland, Italian Eritrea, and occupied Ethiopian territory into six governorates (Eritrea, Somalia, Harar, Galla-Sidamo, Amhara, Scioa).
Collapsed during the 1940-1941 East African Campaign as British Commonwealth and Ethiopian resistance forces defeated Italian forces; Haile Selassie returned to Addis Ababa in May 1941, ending the unified administration (though Italian holdouts persisted regionally into 1943).
Recent focused history of the AOI's formation, administration, and military collapse.
