Italy's Aegean possession - Rhodes, Kos, Leros and the rest of the Dodecanese (with Kastellorizo added in 1923) - held since the 1912 Italo-Turkish War and formalized by the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, governed from Rhodes and heavily fortified as Italy's eastern Mediterranean outpost.
Seized by Germany in the autumn 1943 Dodecanese campaign after the Italian armistice; the German garrison surrendered to the British on 8 May 1945, and after two years of British military administration the islands were ceded to Greece by the Treaty of Paris (10 February 1947, formally incorporated 7 March 1948).
