Irtjet

2300 BC – 2100 BC
ChiefdomAfrica

A small Nubian polity named in Old Kingdom Egyptian inscriptions (the Weni decree lists an 'Overseer of the Medja, Irtjet, and Satju') alongside Wawat, Yam, Medja and Kaau. Egyptian sources describe it, like Wawat, as under the regional hegemony of the kingdom of Yam during the 6th Dynasty.

Disappears from the textual record with the end of Old Kingdom contact with Nubia; unclear whether it was later absorbed into 'Wawat' as an umbrella term.
