Ipiutak

1 – 800
Native nationNorth America

A sprawling settlement of hundreds of houses on the Tigara spit at Point Hope, famous for surreal carved-ivory burial masks and walrus-ivory eye inlays.

The inland-leaning, non-whaling Ipiutak way faded after about AD 800 as sea-mammal hunting cultures took the Strait; their cemeteries are a high point of Arctic art.
