Celtic people of Cisalpine Gaul, the most powerful of the Gaulish tribes in the Po valley, likely descended from the earlier Golasecca culture; their chief town Mediolanum became modern Milan.

Military resistance ended with the fall of Mediolanum (222 BCE); final submission came c. 197 BCE after the Second Punic War, after which they held federated status before full absorption into Roman Italy.
