Indore State (Holkar)

Maratha successor state ruled by the Holkar dynasty on the Malwa plateau, founded as a jagir under Malhar Rao Holkar and later governed from the Narmada-side capital of Maheshwar (notably by the queen Ahilyabai Holkar) and then Indore.

Became a 19-gun-salute princely state within the Central India Agency under British protection after 1818; acceded to the Dominion of India in 1948.
