Founded c. 19 CE when Gondophares, governor of Drangiana under the Parthian Empire, declared independence; ruled Gandhara and the northwest subcontinent from Taxila, and is associated in Christian tradition with the legend of Saint Thomas.

Gradually displaced by the Kushan Empire through the 1st-2nd centuries CE; a residual line persisted in Sakastan/Sistan into the 3rd century before absorption by the Sasanians.
